Restic is actually perfect for backing up virtual machines. It’s really efficient and can store the backed up VM as compressed snapshots. In this video, I demonstrate how to use Restic to backup a Kubuntu VMware virtual machine. Taking it from 20 gigs down to 7 gigs as a backup (with max restic compression). Then I’ll restore the VM from an older backup and run it in VMware.
Note that virtual machine disk should be of VMDK format split into parts. I’ve not tested it with a single virtual disk, but I imagine that won’t work well.
